In 1918, four young Hutterite men in South Dakota refused to serve in WWI on the grounds of conscientious objection. They were court-martialed and sentenced to hard labor at Alcatraz. The men were later transferred to Ft Leavenworth were they died under questionable circumstances.

This events supports the exhibition, "Voices of Conscience: Peace Witness and the Great War," exploring the stories of conscientious objectors during World War I.
