Discussion Leader: Trish Reeves

Abdulrahman and Kathy Zeitoun are typical middle class Americans, raising children and running a house-painting business in New Orleans. As Hurricane Katrina approaches, Kathy evacuates with their four young kids while Zeitoun stays to watch over their home and business. As the floodwaters rise, he travels the city by canoe, feeding abandoned animals and helping elderly neighbors. Days later, police officers armed with M-16s arrest Zeitoun on his own property, adding a new layer to the tragedy his family is enduring. 368 pp.
