Last year, KHC approached historian Virgil Dean about serving as the state scholar for The Way We Worked in Kansas and asked for his help in helping us better understand how the Kansas stories fit within the national narrative on work. Since then, Virgil has offered guidance and scholarship to 21 organizations researching local histories. As Kansans, we often think of farming as “the way we work,” but here Virgil writes about how our perception and our reality may not be one and the same.
